Nightlife in Mariano Roque Alonso is more food court and food park than bar street: for a drink after dark, the safe bets are the Shopping Mariano food court, open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and the food park behind Paseo Alameda. In the afternoon, the local warm-up is a beer and river fish by the water at Remanso, and in July the Expo takes over the whole scene.

Where can you get a drink at night?

Shopping Mariano food court. On Ruta Carlos A. López (the old Transchaco) at Manuel Irala Fernández, 150 m from the Expo's main gate. It is open Sunday to Thursday 11:00–23:00, and Friday and Saturday until midnight (Shopping Mariano (opens in a new tab)). With 14+ outlets and seating for over 1,000 (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), it works for big groups where some want beer and others dinner.

  • Tip: if your group comes in several cars, it is the easiest meeting point in town, with parking and direct access to the Transchaco.

Alameda Food Park. Behind Paseo Alameda, the mall next to La Rural Shopping (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It is an open-air space for 200+ people, aimed at families and friends; in 2024 some stalls stayed open until midnight on weekdays and 01:00 at weekends (Infonegocios, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).

  • Tip: a summer plan with outdoor tables. Check their social media for which stalls are open that day.

Afternoon warm-up: Remanso and Avenida de los Pescadores

By the Remanso bridge on the Paraguay River, fish eateries serve surubí soup, fish milanesas, cazuelas and chupín, daily from 07:00 to 17:00 (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Several have Paraguayan musicians playing polkas and ballads (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Avenida de los Pescadores is lined with river-fish restaurants (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

  • When not to go: during the fishing ban (veda), from early November into December, the eateries stop serving river fish and reopen once it lifts (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).
  • Tip: go at lunchtime or mid-afternoon; they close at 17:00, so move on to the mall or food park after.

Concerts and big nights

  • Expo (July): at the Asociación Rural del Paraguay grounds. In 2026 it ran 11–26 July, general entry G. 25,000, with Saturday shows by Néstor en Bloque, Wisin, Ke Personajes and Kchiporros at the close (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Big concerts are ticketed separately by section.
  • Polideportivo Dr. Alberto Marecos: holds about 3,000 people and hosts concerts and social events as well as games (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Follow the municipality's social media for dates.
  • City anniversary, 30 August: the main local festival, with events at Plaza La Libertad (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

Rules worth knowing

  • Drink-driving: the highway patrol applies zero tolerance. 0.200–0.250 mg/l on the breath is a serious offence, 0.251–0.399 a very serious one, and 0.400 or more is a criminal matter referred to prosecutors (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
  • Smoking and vaping: since Decree 4624 of 2021 there are no enclosed smoking areas in bars and restaurants; smoking is allowed only outdoors where people are not crowded together (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
  • ID and street drinking: in a night-time police operation in San Lorenzo's bar area, 13 of 22 people held had no ID and 7 were drinking in the street (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Carry ID and keep the drinks inside.

How do you get there and back?

Mariano Roque Alonso is about 18 km from Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), and almost everything runs along Ruta PY03 (old Transchaco), the main avenue (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Buses are not a good bet at night: even at morning rush hour people waited up to half an hour on the Transchaco (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). For a late return, use a ride-hailing app or agree on a sober driver. If you want a busier bar scene, Asunción is next door; sort out the ride home first.
