In this guide
Going out in San Lorenzo comes down to three areas: the centre around the Cathedral and the pedestrian street, the UNA campus area (with the Ciclovía park, the natural history museum and Shopping Pinedo), and Ruta PY02, home to San Lorenzo Shopping and Fuente Shopping. Below is what to do in each, where it is and when to go, plus the dates when the whole city heads out.
Where to eat or have a drink in the centre
- Lido Bar San Lorenzo. The branch of Asunción's classic diner is in Paseo La Catedral, at the corner of Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia and Coronel Bogado, with its own parking. It opens Monday to Sunday, 08:00 to 22:00, serving homemade empanadas, chipa guasu, milanesas and surubí dishes, with a weekday set lunch (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Best for an early dinner, since it closes at 22:00.
- Pedestrian street and Plaza Cerro Corá. The peatonal in front of the town hall, with monuments and historic buildings, and Plaza Cerro Corá next to the Cathedral in Barrio San Pedro make up the centre's walk (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In December the Peatonal Bicentenario is decorated for Christmas, a good after-dinner stroll with family.
- Mercado Municipal. In the historic centre, selling fruit, meat, cheese and clothes. It is a morning plan rather than a night one, but works for breakfast or a quick lunch before walking the centre.
The Ciclovía, the campus and Shopping Pinedo
- Ciclovía de San Lorenzo. The city's main park, beside the Universidad Nacional de Asunción, with sports courts, bike paths, a lagoon and streams (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Go at sunset to walk or run. It also hosts big events: on the eve of the 2022 anniversary there was a free concert with Kchiporros and Tierra Adentro (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- Shopping Pinedo. An easy stop for a quick meal, and the municipality held its official serenade there during the 2025 patron-saint festivities (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- National Museum of Natural History of Paraguay. On the Ministry of Agriculture grounds, opposite the UNA (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), at Ruta Mariscal Estigarribia km 13.5, corner of Avenida del Agrónomo. Open weekdays 08:00 to 14:00 (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). A good morning plan with kids or visitors.
What about Ruta PY02?
- San Lorenzo Shopping (Centro Comercial San Lorenzo). On Ruta PY02 around km 15, on the east side of the city (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab); Infonegocios, 2017 (opens in a new tab)). Handy if you are coming from Capiatá or Itauguá and want dinner without driving into the centre.
- Fuente Shopping. Another of the city's large malls, on Ruta Mariscal Estigarribia around km 9.5, with a food court and cinemas (Infonegocios, 2017 (opens in a new tab)). Useful for food and errands in one stop.
Culture and football
- Centro Cultural Estación del Tren Lechero. On the block of the Palacete Municipal, in a rebuilt station that recalls the train that once linked San Lorenzo with Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Teatro Municipal Don Alberto Sánchez Benítez. The culture department staged the historic photo show "Cabildo nde távape" here in 2025 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Follow the municipal agenda for plays and exhibitions.
- Estadio Gunther Vogel. Home ground of Club Sportivo San Lorenzo, holding about 6,200 people (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). On match days the neighbourhood gets busy from the afternoon.
When does the whole city go out?
August 10 is San Lorenzo's day, the city's anniversary and a local holiday. In 2026 the celebrations ran from July 31 to August 10, with a serenade at the UNACE building (Avenida Mariscal López, opposite the campus) and an alternative serenade on the Cathedral esplanade, all free (Hoy (opens in a new tab)). In 2025 there was also the Ñande Rap festival in front of the Palacio de Justicia, a street party on Coronel Romero and a religious serenade in the Cathedral car park (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). August 15, the feast of the Virgen de la Asunción, is the second patron-saint date.
Getting around without losing the evening
San Lorenzo is about 9 km from Asunción, but traffic is constant because of UNA students (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Avoid Mariscal López at the evening rush and, if you are heading to the centre, pick a place with its own parking, such as Paseo La Catedral. If you are drinking, get a taxi or a ride-hailing app home.
