To choose a hotel in San Lorenzo, about 9 km from Asunción, start with why you are going: for the National University (UNA) or the Hospital de Clínicas, look in Villa Universitaria or near Avenida Mariscal López; for work or a stop on the road, Route PY02 gives the most direct access. Before paying a deposit, check that the place is licensed in Registur, the official register kept by the national tourism office, Senatur.

Which part of San Lorenzo should you stay in?

San Lorenzo has 54 neighbourhoods and heavy traffic, so location matters more than the hotel's name (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)):

Always ask for the exact map location, not just the neighbourhood, and check how long it takes to walk or drive to where you will spend the day.

San Lorenzo or Asunción?

According to Wikipedia (opens in a new tab), around 850,000 people come into San Lorenzo each morning and leave in the afternoon, many of them for the university. A short distance on the map can be a long ride at rush hour.

  • Stay in San Lorenzo if you need to be at the campus, the Hospital de Clínicas or an office in the area early.
  • Stay in Asunción if most of your plans are in the capital and San Lorenzo is a single visit. The E1 electric bus links central Asunción with San Lorenzo along the PY02 and Avenida del Agrónomo, runs from 5 am to 11 pm, and cost G. 3,400 in early 2026 (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).

When is it hard to find a room?

10 August is San Lorenzo's feast day, the city anniversary and a local holiday, and 15 August is the second patron feast (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In 2026 celebrations ran from 31 July to 10 August, with free serenades at the UNACE venue and on the cathedral forecourt (Hoy (opens in a new tab)). If you want the centre on those dates, book early.

What to ask before booking

  • Noise: if the room faces Mariscal López, the PY02 or a busy shopping street, ask for one at the back.
  • Air conditioning: the climate is humid subtropical and January is the hottest month (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In summer, working AC comes first.
  • Parking: on-site, gated or on the street. Spaces fill up during the day around the university.
  • Breakfast and reception: when breakfast starts and whether someone can let you in if you arrive late.
  • Wi-Fi: if you will work or study, ask whether it holds up for video calls.
  • Long stays: for a semester or a course of treatment, ask about weekly or monthly rates.

How do you know the place is licensed?

Senatur runs the National Tourism Register (Registur), a platform listing licensed providers, hotels included, and any sanctions against them (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Check it before you transfer money.

If you rent a flat or a room through Airbnb, Facebook or Instagram, Senatur ruled that anyone renting habitually for tourism must be registered in the National Tourism Register under Law 2828/05 (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Ask the host whether they are.

How to pay

  • Invoice: the consumer protection office, Sedeco, reminds that an invoice (factura) must be issued for every sale of goods and services (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). On a business trip, give your tax number when you book.
  • Deposit: if asked for an advance by bank transfer, get written confirmation of dates, rate and cancellation policy.
  • Pix: since 2024, merchants on the Bancard network can accept Pix from Brazilian accounts (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)); not all of them do, so ask first.
