In this guide
San Alberto is a small farming town, northern Alto Paraná's "Capital del Agro", so going out in town is low-key and the named plans sit along the Supercarretera Itaipú highway: Itaipú's Limoy and Itabó reserves, the Hernandarias waterfront and the dam's light show, and Ciudad del Este's Lago de la República and restaurant scene. Here is what to do at each and how to plan a night or weekend out.
What going out in San Alberto is like
San Alberto has about 11,000 residents according to the 2022 census and lives off soy, wheat and maize (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Its first settlers came from Paraná and Santa Catarina in Brazil.
For dinner or drinks with friends in town, message the place on WhatsApp to check it is open that night, especially on weekdays. For a bigger night, head south on the Supercarretera.
Nature nearby: Itaipú's reserves
Reserva Biológica Limoy. Inside San Alberto district, about 160 km north of Hernandarias on the Limoy River. One of Itaipú's protected areas, covering 14,828 hectares. These reserves offer guides, environmental talks, photo safaris and a recreation area (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Check with Itaipú which sections are open before you go.
Reserva Biológica Itabó. About 80 km north of Hernandarias in neighbouring Mbaracayú district. It has interpretive and self-guided trails, with a leaflet so you can walk alone, and a 1,490-metre trail through tall forest. The weekend day trip: bring water, insect repellent and closed shoes.
Visits to Itaipú's areas are booked by phone on (061) 599-8040, by email at cturistico@itaipu.gov.py or via the Ib-tur app (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
A night out in Hernandarias
Head south on the Supercarretera to Hernandarias, next to Ciudad del Este.
Itaipú's Iluminación Monumental. The light show on the dam is the area's best-known night outing. ABC (2022) listed it on Fridays and Saturdays from 19:30, free with a booking.
Costanera de Hernandarias. On the Itaipú lake, with walking paths, a bike lane and catamaran rides. Good for sunset before the light show.
Museo de la Tierra Guaraní. At Itaipú's Environmental Centre, 7 km from Ciudad del Este: an interactive museum on Guaraní culture and wildlife. An afternoon plan with kids.
A weekend in Ciudad del Este
Ciudad del Este, 15 km from Hernandarias, has the region's big going-out scene: Paraguayan, Brazilian, Arab, Japanese and Chinese restaurants, bars, casinos and entertainment venues, according to Última Hora (opens in a new tab) (2026).
Lago de la República. A few blocks from the microcentro, with a 4 km walking loop and an amphitheatre for events. The pre-dinner walk.
Parque Lineal Manuel Ortiz Guerrero. Itaipú's park in Ciudad del Este, with tree-lined trails; ABC (2022) listed it as open daily, 8:00 to 21:00.
How to plan it
- Friday or Saturday night: dinner in town or, for something special, leave early for Hernandarias: waterfront at sunset, then the light show with your booking made.
- Saturday: a day in Ciudad del Este, with a walk around Lago de la República and dinner downtown.
- Sunday: morning at Itabó or Limoy, home for lunch.
Getting around
San Alberto sits at km 80 of the Supercarretera Itaipú, the highway linking the Ciudad del Este area with Salto del Guairá, about 411 km from Asunción. If you head to Hernandarias or Ciudad del Este at night, sort out a designated driver: it is a highway trip, not a city ride.
