Where to stay in Itauguá depending on why you're there: a central hotel, the Hospital Nacional hostel and what to check first.

Itauguá is about 30 km from Asunción on Route PY02 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so many visitors come for the day and don't sleep there. If you do need a bed, the best-documented hotel is Olimpo Hotel & Suites in the centre; if you are there for a patient at the Hospital Nacional, ask first about the relatives' hostel. In December, with the Caacupé pilgrimage, book early.

Should you stay in Itauguá or in Asunción?

It depends on why you are coming:

  • A day of sightseeing (ñandutí lace, the museum, strawberries): head back to Asunción or wherever you are based; distances are short.
  • Evening festivals, such as the Festival Nacional del Ñandutí, which in 2025 started at 20:30 at Club Olimpia, km 32 of the PY02 (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), or National Ñandutí Day, with a folk night and a Sunday-morning parade (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)): staying over saves you the highway at night.
  • Supporting a patient at the Hospital Nacional: you want to be close. See the hostel section below.
  • Work in eastern Greater Asunción: look for parking and easy access to the PY02.

Which hotel has the best track record?

Olimpo Hotel & Suites. At Cerro Corá and Gilberto Fernández, in the centre. Trip.com and Priceline agree that it has an outdoor pool, air-conditioned rooms, free parking and a buffet breakfast (Trip.com (opens in a new tab); Priceline (opens in a new tab)). Priceline adds free Wi-Fi, minibars and ñandutí-inspired décor (Priceline (opens in a new tab)).

Before booking, clear up two things:

A March 2025 Trip.com review complained about the pool's cleanliness; if the pool matters to you, ask for a recent photo on WhatsApp.

Visiting the Hospital Nacional de Itauguá?

This is the most common reason people look for a bed in town, and the hospital has its own hostel for relatives of inpatients:

  • The new hostel: in August 2026 it was in the final stage of construction, with 35 rooms for more than 70 people, a kitchen, dining room, lounge, laundry, accessible bathrooms and a children's play area, funded by Itaipú Binacional. No opening date had been given (Hoy, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
  • The old hostel is due to be demolished to make way for the hospital's reconstruction (Hoy, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
  • Space has long been short: in 2022 some families were living in tents in the hospital grounds, with hygiene and safety problems (Última Hora, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).

What to do: ask the hospital's Social Service whether the new hostel is open, who can use it and what documents you need. If there is no room, find a hotel or a rented room nearby and plan how you will get back and forth at night.

Which dates fill up?

What to check before paying a deposit

  • Highway noise: the PY02 runs right through the municipality (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Ask for a room that doesn't face it.
  • Traffic: a single crash on the PY02 can block the Asunción-bound lane, as happened in Capiatá in 2025 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Leave plenty of time for appointments or flights.
  • Payment: QR codes now account for 68.1% of electronic payments processed by Bancard (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), but confirm whether the hotel takes QR, cards or transfers, and ask for an invoice.
  • Booking in writing: keep a WhatsApp confirmation with dates, price and whether breakfast is included.
