In Itauguá, the right hardware store depends on what you need: for a screw, a tap or a light bulb, the one in your barrio saves you a trip; for a building job, a bigger store on Ruta PY02 that gives you a quote and delivers is usually better. Before heading out, take a photo and measurements of what you need and call to check they have it.

Neighbourhood store or one on the highway?

Ruta PY02 crosses Itauguá from east to west, splitting it into two almost equal halves, and it is where the town's commercial strip is (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). That is where the larger stores tend to be, but driving the highway with a load at rush hour is tiring.

Itauguá is also spread out: it has 46 barrios and many rural compañías, such as Estanzuela, Patiño and Guayaibity north of the highway, and Itauguá Guasú, Mboi'y and Potrerito to the south (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). For small, urgent purchases, look for the closest store on your side. For cement, rebar, roofing sheets or pipes, ask whether they deliver to your compañía and what the delivery fee is.

What to bring so you buy the right thing

  • The old part, or a photo showing the brand and size.
  • Exact measurements: pipe diameter, screw length, hinge width.
  • For paint: a photo of the wall and whether it is indoors or outdoors.
  • For a job: the builder's or electrician's list, with quantities.

If your Spanish is limited, a photo and numbers do most of the talking, and staff can suggest an alternative if they don't stock your brand.

Electrical items: what to check

Cheap plugs and sockets are among the riskiest products in Paraguayan homes: according to INTN, the national standards institute, plastic and ferrous models heat up, melt and can start fires (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). INTN backs the PNA IEC 60906-1 standard, with two current pins plus earth, rated for 16 amps and 250 volts; in 2022 it was voluntary (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).

In practice: ask whether the product is certified, prefer copper contacts and don't buy the cheapest option for an air conditioner or an electric shower.

Rain, heat and roofs

Itauguá gets around 1,500 mm of rain a year and has a warm, humid climate with mild winters and occasional frost (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). If you plan to waterproof, replace gutters or fix roofing sheets, do it before the next storm, and ask how long the product needs to dry.

Quotes, receipts and guarantees

If the store also installs or cuts material to size, Paraguay's consumer law requires the price with taxes, the payment method and how long the quote is valid, and you must be told about extra costs before they are incurred (Law 1334/98 (opens in a new tab)). Any guarantee must be in writing (Law 1334/98 (opens in a new tab)). Always ask for a factura (official receipt), which is required for every sale (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).

QR is the most used electronic payment in Paraguay, at 68.1% of electronic payments in April 2026 according to Bancard (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). For big orders, ask about a cash discount or card instalments.

When to avoid the highway

During the Caacupé pilgrimage in early December, traffic heading inland on PY02 has in past years been diverted at km 31 in Itauguá onto Avenida Japón (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). On those days, shop locally or ask for delivery.
