Entertainment in San Alberto revolves around its festivals: the San Alberto Magno patron saint festival in November, with a music festival, a serenade and the Costillón rib barbecue, plus the cupín barbecues of the town anniversary. The rest of the year, the bigger plans are a drive south along Route PY07: Itaipú's reserves and Monumental Lighting show, the shows at Lago de la República in Ciudad del Este and the adventure parks at the Monday Falls.

What is there to do in town?

San Alberto is a farming town of about 11,000 people in northern Alto Paraná (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so local fun is built around specific dates:

  • San Alberto Magno patron saint festival (mid-November). In 2021 there were nine days of prayers, an arts festival with about ten local acts and guest delegations, a Sunday night serenade, a procession, the main mass and the Costillón (Costelão in Portuguese), ribs roasted on stakes for about 350 people. The mayor declared a local holiday (Última Hora, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Tip: the festival and serenade are the night plan; the Costillón is Sunday lunch.
  • Cupín barbecue festival and expo on the main square. For the 2012 anniversary, alongside the patron saint feast, 200 kg of cupín (beef hump) were roasted for about six hours, and an agricultural, car and variety expo with 12 exhibitors ran on the main square until Sunday night (Última Hora, 2012 (opens in a new tab)). Ask the parish or the municipality whether it is on that year.
  • Colony pastries. Festival stalls bring out cuca and streuselkuchen, German-rooted cakes that arrived via southern Brazil (Última Hora, 2021 (opens in a new tab)), a legacy of the settlers from Paraná and Santa Catarina who founded the town (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

A night in Hernandarias: Monumental Lighting and the Costanera

Hernandarias is about 15 km from Ciudad del Este (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), heading south on PY07.

A day in Ciudad del Este

Ciudad del Este, about 90 km south of San Alberto (Última Hora, 2021 (opens in a new tab)), has the big offer: Paraguayan, Brazilian, Arab, Japanese and Chinese restaurants, bars, casinos and entertainment venues (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).

Adventure: Monday and Ñacunday falls

  • Saltos del Monday (Presidente Franco). A waterfall of more than 45 m with trails, lookouts, zip lines and treetop courses (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). In 2023, entry to both parks was G. 40,000 for Paraguayans or US$12 for foreigners, and activities such as paintball or canyoning cost G. 30,000 to G. 100,000 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
  • Salto Ñacunday. Falls of about 40 m in Ñacunday National Park, some 70 km from Ciudad del Este, with 16 km of dirt road. In 2023: free up to age 10, G. 5,000 for ages 11–17 and G. 20,000 from 18 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Avoid it after heavy rain.

How to plan the weekend

  • Friday: leave in the afternoon for Hernandarias, Costanera at sunset and the Monumental Lighting with your booking done.
  • Saturday: Monday Falls in the morning, Lago de la República in the afternoon.
  • Sunday: Limoy or Itabó early, back in town for lunch.

San Alberto sits on PY07, about 411 km from Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), at km 80 of the road to Salto del Guairá (Wikipedia PT (opens in a new tab)). You need a car for all of this, and summer highs reach about 39 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)): start early and carry water.
