In this guide
To find a doctor in Mariano Roque Alonso, first decide whether you need a general practitioner, a specialist or emergency care, then whether you will use the public system, IPS (social security) or a private practice. For a check-up or a non-urgent problem, book a general physician near your barrio; for a serious emergency, call 141 for the SEME ambulance service or go straight to an emergency department.
GP, specialist or emergency?
In Paraguay a general practitioner is usually listed as clínico or clínica médica, and in public and IPS services you will also see medicina familiar (family medicine). This is the starting point for most things: check-ups, blood pressure, diabetes, a cold that will not clear, lab requests and referrals.
- Clínica médica or family medicine: routine checks, chronic conditions, lab orders and referrals.
- Paediatrics, gynaecology, orthopaedics and other specialities: when you already know what is wrong or have been referred.
- Emergency department: chest pain, shortness of breath, a bad fall, high fever in a baby. Do not wait for an appointment.
- Emergency at home or on the street: SEME, the Ministry of Health's emergency service, answers on 141 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
Public hospital, IPS or private practice?
Hospital Distrital de Mariano Roque Alonso. The city's only public hospital, which according to its director sees about 500 patients a day across emergency care and specialities (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). In July 2026 patients complained about shortages of medicines and supplies and a broken ultrasound machine that meant going elsewhere for scans. It has worked without its own steriliser since 2022: surgery continues at a slower pace, some operations take place at the Military Hospital under an agreement, and urgent cases are not turned away (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). In practice: go early, bring your ID card and ask the hospital pharmacy whether your medicine is in stock before you leave.
IPS. If you pay into social security, IPS's Clínica Yrendagüé is in Mariano Roque Alonso (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). In 2023 IPS began evening appointments from 19:00 to 22:00 in general and family medicine at several outlying clinics, Yrendagüé among them (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Check with the IPS call centre or app whether those hours still apply, and book ahead.
Private practices and sanatoriums. The option if you want a quick appointment or a particular specialist. Ask about the consultation fee, whether tests are charged separately and whether they issue an invoice. If you pay for private health cover (medicina prepaga), make sure the company is registered with the Health Superintendency: in 2024 it shut down six prepaid medicine firms in Asunción and Central department and struck them from its register (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).
Which area should you use?
Route PY03, the old Trans-Chaco highway, is Mariano Roque Alonso's main road, and the city borders Asunción directly to the south (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). That gives you two real options:
- Stay in Mariano for routine visits, especially if you live in outlying barrios such as Arecayá, Surubi'i or Remanso.
- Go into Asunción for specialists or tests you cannot get locally. Allow for PY03 rush-hour traffic.
Watch out in July: the Expo trade fair takes place on the same highway at the Rural Association grounds; in 2026 it ran from 11 to 26 July, during the winter school holidays (Hoy (opens in a new tab)). If your appointment is on the Trans-Chaco during those weeks, leave extra time.
What to bring and ask when booking
- Your ID card (cédula) and, if insured, up-to-date IPS details.
- Previous test results and prescriptions, and a list of the medicines you take.
- For children, their vaccination record.
- When booking privately: the fee, whether they accept your insurance, and whether it is first-come-first-served or a fixed time.
- If you are prescribed antibiotics: since November 2018 they are sold only with a prescription showing your details, the diagnosis and the doctor's signature and registration number, valid for five days (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Fill it within that window.
Heat, storms and when not to wait
Summer highs in Mariano Roque Alonso can top 40 °C, and summer storms are heavy (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In that heat, dizziness, confusion or vomiting in an older person or a child is a reason to see a doctor the same day, not next week. If it is storming and your visit is not urgent, reschedule: in September 2025 heavy rain flooded the district hospital's own emergency department, which its director blamed on the city's poor drainage (Hoy (opens in a new tab)).
For everything else, search your phone's map for "clínica médica" or "médico clínico" near your barrio, compare opening hours and call before you go.
