Shopping and errands in Santa Rita work best as one morning loop: municipality or bank first, then the pharmacy, and the supermarket last, all before many shops close around midday for the siesta (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Almost everything sits on or near Route PY06 in the centre (Wikipedia PT (opens in a new tab)), so with a list and the right order you can be done in two or three hours.

The loop, stop by stop

  1. Paperwork first (early). The municipality is on Avenida De Los Pioneros between Adela Speratti; phones +595 673 220 470 and +595 673 220 043 (Municipalidad (opens in a new tab)). Call the day before to check hours and which documents they need.
  2. Bank or cooperative. Public and private banks, credit cooperatives and insurers have branches in the centre along the PY06 (Wikipedia PT (opens in a new tab)). If you need cash, get it here for the rest of the loop.
  3. Pharmacy. Bring a prescription for antibiotics: they are prescription-only and the prescription is valid for five days (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Check that the box shows a sanitary registration number; complaints go to DINAVISA, the medicines regulator (DINAVISA (opens in a new tab)).
  4. Supermarket last, so meat and dairy do not cook in the car. There are supermarkets in the centre (Dr. Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia street), in Cerro Largo and on Ruta VI in barrio 14 de Mayo (Guía Santa Rita (opens in a new tab)), plus in barrio Sinuelo and on Avenida 14 de Mayo opposite the Catholic church (BuscoInfo (opens in a new tab)). Pick the one on your way home.
  5. Farm supplies. If you work a farm, seed, agrochemical, fertiliser and machinery dealers are also in the centre (Wikipedia PT (opens in a new tab)); slot them between the bank and the supermarket.

When to go

What to carry

  • Phone with QR payments: the most used electronic method, 68.1% of Bancard payments in April 2026 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
  • Pix: Bancard merchants can take payments from Brazilian accounts (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)); ask before you fill the trolley.
  • Guaraníes in small notes for corner shops, parking and markets.
  • ID card or passport for paperwork and collecting parcels.
  • Reusable bags and a cool box if you live out in a colony.

Your rights as a shopper

When Santa Rita does not have it

For electronics or big purchases, the option is Ciudad del Este, about 70 km away (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). According to ABC Color, shops there open at 6 or 7 and close between 15:00 and 16:00, many prices are in US dollars and street-stall goods are often imitations (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Leave early and be back before dark.
