The must-sees in Santa Rosa (Misiones) sit within two blocks of the centre: the Loreto chapel with its Jesuit-era frescoes, the red-stone bell tower and the Santa Rosa de Lima church, which reopened in August 2025. With an extra day you can add Cerro Alto, the balancing rock and the Tebicuary wetlands. The town is 248 km from Asunción on Route PY01.

What to see in the historic centre

Everything is around Plaza Mariscal Estigarribia on Avenida Florida, and you can walk it all.

  1. Chapel of Our Lady of Loreto. The reason most people come: walls frescoed with natural plant dyes and saints' figures such as a Pietà (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). It works as a museum, the smallest on the Jesuit Route, at Avenida Florida 637 (Pilgrimaps (opens in a new tab)), a few metres from the bell tower on the same pavement.
  2. El Torreón. A 20-metre Jesuit bell tower in red stone, built in 1698 and restored in 2018 by the public works ministry (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). It is the town's emblem and the classic photo.
  3. Santa Rosa de Lima church. Closed for six years over collapse risk, it reopened on 1 August 2025 after a year of works (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Inside is the altarpiece that survived the fire after the Jesuits were expelled (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
  4. Plaza Mariscal Estigarribia. Big shade trees and a fountain with stone figures, including a Kurupí, carved by artist Koki Ruiz (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
  5. Casa de Indios. The long, arcaded dwellings from the mission era beside the plaza, now home to shops (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).

How to book a guided visit

  • The parish runs tours of the church, the Loreto chapel and the historic centre. Ask at the parish office, open 7:30 to 11:30 (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
  • The original tabernacle chapel can be seen Tuesday to Saturday mornings, also on request at the parish office.
  • La Nación published a contact for tours: Gloria Ortiz, (0972) 185-075.
  • The office closes before noon, so arrive in the morning if you want a guide.

Nature outside town

When to go: the Santa Rosa de Lima festival

The big day is 30 August. In 2024 there was a procession of about 15 blocks, an open-air Mass, a spit-roast asado a la estaca, a 14:00 torín (rural bull show) with tickets at G. 20,000 and G. 40,000, a dinner show at night, and the fair ran until 1 September (Última Hora, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Book a bed early for those dates.

Summers are fierce, with highs up to 43 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so do the hill walk early.

Getting to Santa Rosa

  • By car from Asunción: 248 km south on Route PY01; the town road joins the highway and enters along a paved, palm-lined avenue (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
  • By bus from Asunción: at the bus terminal, ask for services heading south on PY01 that stop in Santa Rosa.
  • From Encarnación: the 2023 municipal timetable listed Victoria de Boquerón departures to Santa Rosa at 10:30 and 18:30 (Encarnación municipality (opens in a new tab)).
  • That is more than 490 km round trip from Asunción, so stay overnight if you want the hill or the wetlands too.
