Visiting Itaipú Binacional from the Paraguayan side costs nothing, but you can only get in with a booking. The core visit is the guided tour of the hydroelectric plant, which starts at the Visitor Reception Centre in Hernandarias, about 15 km from Ciudad del Este; on a Friday or Saturday, add the evening light show.

How to book an Itaipú visit

Every visit on the Paraguayan side is free and every one needs a reservation (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Itaipú's published channels are:

In 2023 the booking desk answered Monday to Friday 7:30–11:45 and 13:00–15:45, and weekends and holidays 8:00–12:00 and 13:00–15:45 (La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Group bookings ask for names, ages and head count, and on the day bring your passport or ID card, since most tours require it (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)).

The tourist complex closes on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

What you see at the dam

Plant tour. This is the main event: almost 125,000 people took it in 2025 (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Wikivoyage describes it as roughly 30 minutes with a video, a bus ride across the dam and a stop at a lookout over the spillway, often in Spanish only (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Groups leave several times a day in the morning and early afternoon; in 2022 ABC Color listed departures at 9:00, 10:00, 10:30, 13:10 and 13:30 (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). You get your exact slot when you book.

Open spillway. When Itaipú opens the spillway gates, groups are taken by bus to the right-bank lookout with technical staff. In January 2023 around 7,000 people came to watch in one week (La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). It doesn't happen often, so ask when you book.

Special and technical visits. Wikivoyage mentions longer group visits on weekday mornings that need an enquiry at least a week ahead (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). If engineering is your thing, ask early.

The light show: Fridays and Saturdays

The Iluminación Monumental lights up the dam with sound and colour. It runs on Fridays and Saturdays, check-in opens at 18:30 at the Visitor Reception Centre, entry is free and bookings close on the Thursday of each week (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Wikivoyage notes the start time moves later in summer (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Plan to sleep in Ciudad del Este or Hernandarias if you stay for it.
