Day trip to Santa Rosa Misiones: route, timing and San Ignacio

Santa Rosa Misiones in one long day from Asunción: a morning guided visit to the Loreto chapel and San Ignacio's Jesuit museum on the way back.

A white chapel with a clay-tile roof and wooden bell tower stands by a dirt path where three people walk away.

A day trip to Santa Rosa Misiones from Asunción is possible, but it is a long day: 248 km each way on Route PY01, close to 500 km of driving in total. The plan that works best is to arrive in the morning for the guided visit to the Loreto chapel and the church, have lunch in town, and stop at the Jesuit museum in San Ignacio on the way back, since it sits on the same highway.

Is it worth doing in one day?

Yes, if you leave before dawn and accept driving back after dark. The key is the parish timetable: the office that arranges guided visits is open 7:30 to 11:30 (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Arrive after noon and you will see the bell tower and plaza from outside but miss the best part. If you also want to climb Cerro Alto or reach the Tebicuary wetlands, it does not fit in a day: stay the night.

Getting there

  • By car: Route PY01 south. San Ignacio is at km 226 and Santa Rosa 248 km from Asunción, on its own access road off PY01 (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
  • By bus: at Asunción's bus terminal, ask which services heading south on PY01 stop in Santa Rosa and San Ignacio, and check the last bus back before you go.
  • Fill the tank and carry cash; small towns run largely on guaraníes.

Morning: Santa Rosa's Jesuit centre

Everything is around Plaza Mariscal Estigarribia on Avenida Florida.

  1. Go to the parish office first and ask for the guided visit, which covers the church, the Loreto chapel and the historic centre. La Nación published a contact for bookings: Gloria Ortiz, (0972) 185-075. Message her the day before.
  2. Loreto chapel. Frescoes painted with natural plant dyes and figures such as a Pietà (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)); it is the smallest museum on the Jesuit Route, at Avenida Florida 637 (Pilgrimaps (opens in a new tab)).
  3. Santa Rosa de Lima church. Reopened on 1 August 2025 after six years closed over collapse risk (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Tuesday to Saturday mornings, on request, you can also see the original tabernacle chapel.
  4. Bell tower, plaza and Casa de Indios. The 20 m red-stone tower from 1698 stands on the same pavement as the chapel; beside the plaza are the old mission dwellings, now shops (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).

Lunch and some time outdoors

Ka'aguy Piro'y recreation complex, in the San Francisco community 7 km from the centre, serves home cooking, fish and grilled or stewed beef, and has pools and camping (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Check on their social media that they are open. If you would rather not detour, eat in the centre and enjoy the shade of the plaza.

Afternoon: San Ignacio's Jesuit museum on the way back

San Ignacio is on PY01, heading back to Asunción. Its Diocesan Museum of Jesuit Mission Art opens Tuesday to Saturday, 8:00 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 17:00; Sundays and holidays by booking only. General entry is G. 20,000, students aged 14 to 17 pay G. 10,000 and under-13s go free (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). It is on Calle Iturbe at Capitán Alfonso del Puerto (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Arrive before 16:00 to see the rooms calmly, and get back on the road before full dark.

Which day to choose

  • Tuesday to Saturday: both the Santa Rosa tabernacle chapel and the San Ignacio museum's regular hours line up.
  • 30 August, the Saint Rose of Lima festival, fills the town with a procession, Mass, spit-roast asado and a torín (Última Hora, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Fun, but not a day for quiet guided tours.
  • In summer, leave even earlier; midday heat in Misiones is intense.
