In this guide
San Ignacio Guazú works as a day trip from Asunción: it sits at km 226 on Route PY01, about 450 km round trip, so it is a long day but no overnight is needed. The plan: the Jesuit art museum first thing, the historic centre and the Chaco War museum before lunch, then Santa María de Fe, 12 km away, with its museum in an original mission house.
Getting there and how much driving
- By car: Route PY01 south to km 226; the town is also where Route PY04 to Pilar begins (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). On the way in you pass the twin avenue at Loma Clavel (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- By bus: at Asunción's bus terminal, ask which southbound services stop in San Ignacio and note the last one back.
- Leave early: the main museum closes at midday and only reopens at 14:30.
Morning: Jesuit museum and historic centre
- Diocesan Museum of Jesuit Mission Art (8:00). About 30 polychrome wooden carvings made by Guaraní artisans in the missions, period documents including a 1635 letter from King Philip IV (Pilgrimaps (opens in a new tab)), and a baroque Saint Michael the Archangel. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 8:00 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 17:00; Sundays and holidays by booking only. Entry G. 20,000, students aged 14 to 17 G. 10,000, under-13s and local residents free (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). It is on Iturbe at Capitán Alfonso del Puerto (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- Museo Semblanza de Héroes. Also on Iturbe, between San Roque González and Marcial de Lorenzana (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Chaco War uniforms, a scale model and part of Rear Admiral Ramón Enrique Martino's aircraft. Open Monday to Saturday, 7:00 to 17:00, free (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- Parish church and Casa de los Indios. The church was built between 1919 and 1932 on the remains of the Jesuit temple (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)) and has paintings by artist Koki Ruiz inside; opposite, on Calle Cerro Corá, is the mission-era Casa de los Indios (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
Midday: MUVA, the Viedma Museum
MUVA is a newer complex devoted to the Jesuit-Guaraní legacy: 78 murals, each about 2 by 3 metres, painted by its founder Manuel Viedma, plus temporary galleries, a library, gardens and a café-restaurant (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). At the entrance stands a sculpture called "Raza Mestiza", and inside is a well more than 400 years old (InfoNegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Check hours and prices at muva.com.py (opens in a new tab) before you go; it is a handy lunch stop without leaving town.
Afternoon: Santa María de Fe, 12 km away
- Jesuit-Guaraní art museum. Housed in one of the best-preserved mission-era Indian houses in Misiones, with carvings from the missions and works attributed to the Jesuit sculptor José Brasanelli. It is at Mariscal López and Ciudad de Hays, and visits need advance booking (Pilgrimaps (opens in a new tab)); book a day ahead.
- Ykua Teja. An old spring that served as the community laundry, restored by the municipality with lighting and a park (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- Get back on PY01 in daylight: Santa María de Fe is 242 km from Asunción (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
Which day to go
- Tuesday to Saturday: when the Diocesan Museum opens without booking. It is closed on Mondays and only opens by booking on Sundays.
- Good Friday: in Tañarandy, a rural community of San Ignacio, the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows leaves the Santa Cruz Tañarandy chapel, follows the Yvága Rape path lit by thousands of oil lamps and ends at the barraca with a living tableau at night (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). It finishes late, so that is not a same-day round trip: stay nearby and book well ahead.
- 31 July: feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the town's patron (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
