In this guide
You can do Pilar as a day trip from Asunción, but it is a very long day: about 230 km each way (opens in a new tab) on the PY19, close to 460 km of driving in total. If you still want to, leave at dawn, keep stops short and give Pilar the middle of the day: basilica, Museo Cabildo, a river-fish lunch and the promenade. If you can stay one night, the trip becomes far more enjoyable.
The route: PY19 via Villeta and Alberdi
- Route: head south through Villeta and follow the PY19 "Héroes de 1870", which links Villeta with Alberdi (opens in a new tab) and is the gateway to Ñeembucú. From Alberdi, 90 km of paved road (opens in a new tab), opened in December 2023, take you to Pilar.
- Why this way: the old route is 358 km (opens in a new tab); the PY19 saves about 130 km.
- Before you go: full tank, water and cash. Services are thin between towns.
- Without a car: ask at Asunción's bus terminal for departures and, above all, the last bus back. By bus a same-day return is even tighter, so staying the night makes more sense.
Stops on the way
With one day, pick one stop going and one coming back at most.
- Villeta (36 km). About 36 km from Asunción (opens in a new tab). Good for a quick stretch in the centre on the way out, or for the riverside Paseo Costero (opens in a new tab) on the way back. More in our Villeta day trip.
- Alberdi. The route's commercial town (opens in a new tab), handy for fuel and snacks. In summer, ABC Color recommended its Punta Arena beach for families (opens in a new tab) (2022); save it for a trip with an overnight.
Midday in Pilar: the essentials
Drive straight to the centre and walk:
- Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar and Plaza de los Héroes opposite. It is Paraguay's only minor basilica (opens in a new tab).
- Museo Cabildo, the only colonial cabildo still standing in the country (opens in a new tab), with objects from Marshal López (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). No published hours, so call the town hall if it is your priority.
- River-fish lunch: surubí, corvina, pacú or dorado (opens in a new tab). This is the meal that makes the drive worth it.
- Ñeembucú stream promenade: a 1,120 m path with lookouts (opens in a new tab) to walk off lunch. Look up at the square trees: howler monkeys (opens in a new tab) often show up in the early afternoon.

When to head back
Set your departure time from Pilar before you arrive and stick to it: the same 230 km are waiting. Driving at night after a full day on the road is what you most want to avoid, so leave in daylight and only stop in Villeta if you are ahead of schedule.
Can I add Humaitá?
Not on a same-day trip from Asunción. Humaitá is about 40 km further south of Pilar (opens in a new tab) on a dirt road. To see the Triple Alliance War sites, sleep in Pilar and go the next day: see our Humaitá day trip.
When to go
- Holy Week: the traditional corvina fishing tournament (opens in a new tab) fills the town; book if you plan to stay.
- First Saturday of January: the Fiesta Hawaiana (opens in a new tab) on the Ñeembucú stream.
- 12 October: Our Lady of Pilar's feast day (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Summer: midday heat is intense; walk the centre early or after the hottest hours.
