In this guide
Limpio is about 20 km from Asunción on Route PY03, so a day trip here is built around the river: the morning at the port of Piquete Cué with a canoe out to El Peñón castle, midday in the town centre with San José church and palm-leaf hats, and in the afternoon, if you still have energy, the colonial church of Emboscada further north.
Getting to Piquete Cué
- To Limpio: take Route PY03 (the Transchaco), which is paved (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab); ABC Color, 2019 (opens in a new tab)).
- To the river: in central Limpio turn onto avenida San José, where the parish church and town hall stand, and follow it about 7 km to Piquete Cué on the Paraguay River (ABC Color, 2019 (opens in a new tab)).
- Tip: go early. Mornings are cooler on the water, and the boatmen start at 06:30 (Bienvenido a Paraguay (opens in a new tab)).
Morning on the river: El Peñón and the lagoons
- El Peñón castle. A small white castle on a rock rising about 20 m out of the Paraguay River between Limpio and Villa Hayes, declared cultural heritage by the National Culture Secretariat in 2018 (ABC Color, 2019 (opens in a new tab)). Boatmen at Piquete Cué make the roughly 890 m crossing; in 2019 it cost G. 10,000 (ABC Color, 2019 (opens in a new tab)). Tip: when the river runs very low the rock base is exposed (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)); ask the boatmen about water levels before you get in.
- Yacaré Yrupé garden. Lagoons at Hernandarias and Calle 18 in Piquete Cué, with paid entry, kayak or boat hire and parking; the boatmen work 06:30 to 19:00 (Bienvenido a Paraguay (opens in a new tab)). The giant water-lily leaves usually appear between December and January (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). The plant is protected: picking leaves or flowers is illegal (MADES (opens in a new tab)).
- For a full day on the water. Lobo Pe runs boat trips from Piquete Cué's municipal beach up the Paraguay, Piribebuy and Manduvirá rivers, spotting birds, monkeys, giant otters and caimans (InfoNegocios, 2022 (opens in a new tab); Lobo Pe (opens in a new tab)). In 2022 the full-day trip cost G. 350,000 per person including food, with five seats per boat (InfoNegocios, 2022 (opens in a new tab)); book through their Facebook page.
Midday in central Limpio
- San José church. The town's main church, with an 1850 façade, on the same avenida San José you took to the river (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab); ABC Color, 2019 (opens in a new tab)).
- Plaza Silvestre Aveiro. The central square, where town events happen (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). A good shady break.
- Karanday palm hats and baskets. Limpio's signature craft: hats, bags and baskets woven from palm leaf (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Buy from the artisans and bring cash.
- Municipal market. To round off the walk through the centre (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
Optional afternoon: Emboscada
With time to spare, continue north to Emboscada, 39 km from Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Check the route on your phone map before leaving Limpio.
- San Agustín church. Probably built around 1774, with Franciscan-style altarpieces and carvings and well-preserved 18th-century architecture (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Stone and palm crafts. Emboscada is the "city of stone": besides stonework, look for karanday hats, wooden guampas (tereré cups) and vine-woven items (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Puerto Arecutacuá. A historic port on the Paraguay River, known for fishing (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
When to go
- December and January: water-lily season; it doesn't appear every year, so check news before going (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- 19 March: feast of San José, Limpio's patron saint (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- September: the Abasto Norte market on PY03 holds the Paseo de las Flores plant fair; in 2026 it ran 17–21 September, 07:00 to 17:00 (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- 24 July and 28 August: Emboscada's feasts of San Francisco Solano, with masked dancers, and San Agustín (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
In summer bring water, a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent: there's little shade on the river and lagoons.
