Carmen del Paraná makes an easy day trip from Encarnación: it is 35 km along Route PY01 (Última Hora, 2022 (opens in a new tab)), so you can spend the morning at the old railway station museum and the Battle of Tacuarí site, and the afternoon on one of its three Paraná beaches until sunset. From Asunción it is not a day trip: it is about 330 km away (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so sleep there or in Encarnación.
Getting there from Encarnación
- Road: take PY01 towards Asunción; Carmen is 35 km out, between Encarnación and Coronel Bogado (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- In town: everything that matters is on or near the Avenida Costanera Cuna de la Independencia (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)), so once parked you can do most of it on foot.
- Tip: most streets outside the centre are dirt or gravel (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). After rain, stick to paved roads.
Morning: station, bridge and church
- Museo Carmen del Paraná and the tourist office. Both are in a replica of the old railway station, rebuilt about 500 m uphill when the waterfront was built. The museum covers the railway, the immigrants and the town before the Yacyretá reservoir rose (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). Start here and ask what is on that day.
- Railway bridge. Next to the station, the iron bridge of the Carlos Antonio López railway, about 32 m long, rescued during the waterfront works (Última Hora, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- Virgen del Carmen church and Plaza Tacuary. The church dates from 1857 and keeps Jesuit-era statues brought from the Itapúa mission, such as the Tupã ra'y (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)).
Midday: rice country and lunch
Carmen calls itself the "rice capital": according to La Nación it processes 80% of the rice eaten in Paraguay, and the town has a growing Food Park with specialty coffee and well-known chains (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). It is the practical lunch stop. In season, Tacuary beach also has bars and food stands (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)).
Afternoon: the Battle of Tacuarí and the beach
- Tacuarí beach and Parque Municipal Batalla de Tacuary. The Battle of Tacuarí was fought on 9 March 1811 where the beach now is; Pedro Ríos, the 12-year-old drummer boy killed in the fighting, is buried there (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). The municipal park is on the same waterfront (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)).
- Pick a beach to match your plan (entry is free; chairs, umbrellas and loungers are extra) (La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)):
- Tacuary for music, drumming and a crowd.
- Ybycuí for families.
- Pirayú for quiet: it has a VIP section about 400 m long with shaded huts and loungers (La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), and in 2022 it was pitched as a water-sports beach with no loud music (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- Activities: paragliding, kayaking and boat rides are on offer (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Ask for prices on the beach; we found none published.
Sunset and the drive back
Stay on the waterfront until the sun goes down: a cool breeze comes in and, with no town on the Argentine side, the horizon looks like the sea (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). Then it is 35 km back to Encarnación on PY01.
When to go and how to adjust the day
- Beach season: the three beaches run in summer (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)); in 2022 Pirayú's season opened on 10 December (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). On 1 January 2023 more than 20,000 visitors were estimated (Última Hora, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), so arrive early on peak dates.
- Off season: do just the history morning. This is one of Paraguay's coolest areas and winter lows near the river can reach −4 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Special dates: 16 July is the Virgen del Carmen feast, with a procession and food fair (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)); at Easter there are sand sculptures on the beaches and boat rides (Última Hora, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- Adding another stop: the Jesuit ruins, the Yacyretá dam and the yerba mate route are all within about 50 km (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), but in different directions. Pick one, such as the Trinidad day trip. More ideas in things to do in Carmen del Paraná.
