In this guide
Caazapá is more than 200 km from Asunción, so a same-day return only works by car and leaving before dawn: it is over three hours' driving each way. For a comfortable day trip, go from Villarrica, 50 km away (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), or spend a night in Caazapá. The core of the visit is compact: the Ykua Bolaños spring, San Pablo church with its Franciscan altarpiece, the Museo Fray Juan Bernardo and the San Roque oratory.
Can you do it as a day trip from Asunción?
You can, but it is a heavy day. Sources give 198 to 230 km depending on the route: Infonegocios estimates about three hours ten minutes by car (Infonegocios, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), while La Nación and Última Hora give 230 km (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab); Última Hora, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Round trip, that is more than six hours at the wheel.
- From Asunción: leave before 06:00, see only the historic centre and the Ykua, and start back in mid-afternoon.
- From Villarrica: 50 km on the PY08; the best base for a true day trip (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- If you can stay over: Infonegocios suggests one night and two days, adding Fulgencio Yegros and Yuty (Infonegocios, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
Getting there
- By car: Ruta PY02 from Asunción to Coronel Oviedo, then the PY08 south through Villarrica (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Fill up in Oviedo or Villarrica.
- By bus: Caazapá has a bus terminal (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Ask for departure times at the Asunción bus terminal the day before; given the travel time, by bus it makes sense to stay the night.

The stops, one by one
- Ykua Bolaños: the spring that, legend says, gushed out when Friar Luis Bolaños struck a rock with his staff during a drought. It is 1 km from the urban area, at the Prof. Ignacio Falcón Real sports centre (ABC Color, March 2023 (opens in a new tab)), with pedestrian access and regular upkeep (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). Start here while the morning is cool.
- San Pablo church: in the centre. A fire destroyed the old church, but the wooden altarpiece carved by Indigenous craftsmen under Franciscan guidance survived (ABC Color, May 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- Acera Pucú: facing the church, houses from the old mission more than 400 years old; one of them is now a museum owned by a local family (ABC Color, May 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- Museo Fray Juan Bernardo: opposite San Pablo church, covering the town's history; ABC suggests allowing about two hours (ABC Color, May 2023 (opens in a new tab)). If you are short on time, trim here.
- San Roque oratory: an 18th-century chapel inside the cemetery, with adobe walls, a cane-and-tile roof and a Franciscan altarpiece with a crucified Christ and a San Roque figure (ABC Color, March 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Francisco de Paula López, brother of President Carlos Antonio López, is buried there.
- Naranja Sapatu monument: a tribute to the women who walked barefoot along the old dirt roads, beside a stream and an orange tree (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). A good last photo before heading home.
When to go
- January: the town's founding anniversary is on the 10th (Última Hora, 2022 (opens in a new tab)), the Ykua Bolaños festival is held every January beside the spring, and the 25th is the feast of San Pablo, the patron saint (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). Busier and very hot: arrive early.
- Rest of the year: quieter days. In winter the days are short; leaving from Asunción, you will drive back in the dark.
Before you leave
- Bring cash, water and sunscreen.
- The museums do not publish fixed hours: ask when you arrive, for example at the Municipalidad.
- If you are driving back to Asunción, take a break in Villarrica or Coronel Oviedo.
