In this guide
Cerro Akatí is a viewpoint in the Ybytyruzú hills, in Independencia (Guairá department), reached by about 13–17 km of dirt road from Melgarejo, the district's town centre. At the top you get the wide view over Guairá from its famous wooden bench, a second lookout towards Villarrica, camping and a small canteen (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2017 (opens in a new tab)). Go in a high-clearance vehicle, carry cash and expect to walk the last stretch.
What is there to do at the top?
- The bench viewpoint. This is the photo everyone comes for: a wooden bench facing the Guairá horizon and the Ybytyruzú ridges (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). ABC lists Akatí among Paraguay's ten highest hills.
- The mirador'i. A short trail leads to a smaller second lookout facing Villarrica (La Nación, 2017 (opens in a new tab)).
- Sunset. Visitors rate it as the best time to be up there (TripAdvisor (opens in a new tab)). If you want to stay until dark, plan to sleep at the top rather than drive the dirt road down at night.
- Camping or a cabin. There is a campsite and cabins for the night (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab); ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- Itá Letra. On the way up there is a sign for the Itá Letra trail, caves with inscriptions considered pre-Guaraní (La Nación, 2017 (opens in a new tab)). Ask at the top whether the path is open and whether a guide is a good idea.
How do you get there?
Independencia borders Villarrica to the west (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Villarrica is about 172 km from Asunción and linked to Coronel Oviedo by Route PY08 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). The road to the hill leaves from Melgarejo, in Independencia's urban area (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- Dirt distance: one visitor measured 12.9 km of bad road from Melgarejo (TripAdvisor, 2023 (opens in a new tab)); the sign at the start says "17 kilómetros para el cerro" (La Nación, 2017 (opens in a new tab)).
- Vehicle: ABC recommends a 4x4 pickup. About 2 km below the summit there is paid parking for those who prefer not to drive on (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)); in March 2026 a visitor left the car about 600 m from the top and walked (TripAdvisor (opens in a new tab)).
- After rain: the steep, loose-stone final stretch gets tricky; phone ahead and ask about the road.
How much does it cost, and what facilities are there?
Visitors reported an entry fee of G. 40,000 per person in September 2023 and in March 2026 (TripAdvisor (opens in a new tab)). In 2021 ABC Color gave G. 30,000 for a day visit and G. 60,000 with camping, plus a bar-restaurant at the top, wifi and rooms to book. The person in charge, Roberto Cubas, is on +595 982 379 706 (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab); Trip.com (opens in a new tab)).
Bring cash, and do not count on the canteen at any hour: a visitor who arrived after 18:00 in March 2026 found it closed and the toilet dirty (TripAdvisor (opens in a new tab)). Carry your own water and snacks.
When to go and what to watch for
- Hours: in 2017 the gate opened 07:00–18:00 (La Nación, 2017 (opens in a new tab)). If you are not camping, arrive mid-afternoon so you have light for the way down.
- Footing: the summit is slippery; wear closed shoes and keep children away from the edge (TripAdvisor (opens in a new tab)).
- Weather: temperatures change with altitude, so bring a light layer even on a hot day (La Nación, 2017 (opens in a new tab)).
What else is nearby in Independencia?
- Salto Suizo. A waterfall of about 60 m on private land, now presented as Parque Ecológico Salto Suizo. You drive about 7 km via Tilinski and Wolfgang Greissel streets and walk the last kilometre following lilac flags, crossing a log bridge and going down stone steps (La Nación, 2017 (opens in a new tab); ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). It is at its best after rain.
- Salto Mirian Mabel. In the Cerro León area, with an accessible viewpoint and a ramped trail designed for wheelchair users, plus a suspension bridge (Última Hora, 2019 (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)).
- San Vicente de Paul church. The town church, built in 1939 from stones settlers carried by hand from the Tacuaras stream (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Its patron-saint festival is on the first Saturday of November.
