To choose a school in San Lorenzo, settle three things first: whether you want a public, private, or subsidized private school; how much daily travel your child can handle; and which level they need. Then shortlist two or three schools near home or on your commute, visit them during class hours, and ask for everything you will pay over the year in writing.
Public, private, or subsidized?
San Lorenzo has all three, from neighborhood schools to the Centro Regional de Educación Saturio Ríos, one of the largest public institutions in the country (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). The practical difference is cost and what a school can charge you:
- Public school (gestión oficial): enrollment is free. The Ministry of Education (MEC) reminds families that the parents' association fee is voluntary and cannot be a condition for enrollment (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).
- Subsidized private (subvencionado): the state covers part of the cost and families pay a fee. Ask for the monthly fee and any other charges.
- Private: enrollment fee, monthly fees, uniform, supplies, activities, and sometimes transport. Get the full list in writing before you sign up.
If a public school asks you to pay to enroll, you can report it to the MEC at (021) 497-555, 0800-114975, or quejasydenuncias@mec.gov.py.
Which level does your child need?
Paraguay's system works like this: early education up to age 5, basic school from 1st to 9th grade (ages 6 to 14, in three cycles), and secondary school (educación media) of three years (ages 15 to 17), with a science-track or technical bachillerato. If you want your child to stay in one school for years, check that it offers every level you will need; switching between 9th grade and secondary is common, but plan it ahead.
For secondary, ask which tracks they offer. A science bachillerato and a technical one lead to different places, and schools do not all offer the same options.
How much traffic will you face every day?
San Lorenzo is about 9 km from Asunción and is a forced passage for metro-area traffic. Mariscal Estigarribia and Julia Miranda Cueto avenues, Ruta PY02, and the area around the UNA campus in Villa Universitaria get heavily congested at peak hours, partly because of students arriving from other cities.
- Do a test run at the real drop-off time, not on a Sunday.
- If your child will take the bus, check which lines stop near the school and where they would get off.
- If the school offers a school bus, ask about the route and pickup time.
A less famous school ten minutes from home often beats a well-known one that means crossing the whole city.
What should you ask a "bilingual" school?
Every school in Paraguay teaches Spanish and Guaraní. If a school calls itself "bilingual," ask which languages it means. If you want English, ask how many hours per week, from which grade, whether any subjects are taught in English, and whether they prepare students for an international exam. Ask to see a class or materials for your child's grade.
What should you look at during the visit?
Ask for a visit on a school day, not just a meeting in the office. Look at:
- Class size, and whether younger grades have an assistant teacher.
- Ventilation and shade: in the hot months, poorly ventilated classrooms make a real difference.
- Safety at drop-off and pickup: how they control who collects children.
- Communication with families: which channel they use and how often they send reports.
- Academic support: what they do if your child falls behind in a subject.
When should you enroll?
The 2026 school year started on February 23 and ends on November 30 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Many schools open enrollment for the next year near the end of the year, when report cards come out, and private schools tend to fill places earlier. If you want a spot at a school in demand, start asking in September or October. If you are moving from abroad, ask the school which documents they need in your case and whether your child's previous studies need any paperwork with the MEC.
