In this guide
Going out in Filadelfia means an early dinner, a sunset walk and, if your dates line up, one of the region's big festivals: there are no nightclubs or bar streets. The Mennonite part of town goes very quiet after dark (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)), so an evening here is built around the Hotel Florida restaurant, a stroll on Avenida Hindenburg and the events calendar, especially the Expo Rodeo Trébol in August.
What is a night in Filadelfia like?
Shorter than you might expect if you are coming from Asunción. According to Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab):
- Shops close from 12:00 to 14:00 on weekdays, on Saturday afternoons and on Sundays. If you are out at the weekend, decide where to eat before you leave the hotel.
- There are a few small bars south of the Fernheim Cooperative supermarket, in the Indigenous and Latino neighbourhoods. Ask at your hotel which one is open and how to get back.
- Few businesses accept cards, so carry guaraníes.
Where to eat out in the evening
Hotel Florida restaurant. The safe bet. It is at Avenida Hindenburg 165-S (official site (opens in a new tab)), serves buffets at lunch and dinner plus an à la carte menu (InfoNegocios, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), and opens every day including holidays (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). At night you can eat in the courtyard, and Wikivoyage recommends the pizzas, which feed two. On a Sunday it may be one of the only places open in the centre.
Girasol. A steakhouse on Calle Unruh (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab); Trip.com (opens in a new tab)) focused on beef, with a lunchtime buffet priced by weight according to Wikivoyage. It works best for a long Saturday lunch before the town shuts for the afternoon. Call ahead to check dinner hours.
Practical tip: eat early and ask when the kitchen closes; this is an early-to-bed town.
Where to watch the sunset
- Avenida Hindenburg and Parque de las Memorias. The main street and the central park with its monument to the first settlers (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)) are the obvious evening walk. On 35 to 40 °C days, Paraguay's health ministry advises being active between 18:00 and 22:00 (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)), which is exactly when the town comes out.
- Fortín Isla Po'i. Marshal Estigarribia's former command post has a lookout that is good at sunset; you reach it via the Transchaco and then the Bioceanic Route from the Loma Plata junction (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). You need a car, and it is wiser to drive back in daylight or with someone who knows the road. Some forts require advance booking, so call first.
Which events fill the evenings?
- Expo Rodeo Trébol (August). The country's oldest agricultural fair (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)) is held at the Asociación Rodeo Trébol grounds in Loma Plata district. In 2025 it ran from 12 to 17 August, entry was G. 30,000 and activities started around 8:00 (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). The programme includes concerts (InfoNegocios, 2024 (opens in a new tab)), and the 2025 edition had riders, music and food, with 41,688 visitors (InfoNegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). It is the busiest week of the year: book beds and transport early.
- Fiesta de las Tradiciones (late June or early July). Performances by the area's different communities, traditional games and food (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- December. Christmas markets and classical music concerts at the local conservatory (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). The quietest, most unusual night out in the region.
- Local sports tournaments. La Nación lists them among the events that bring the town together (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)); ask the Fernheim Cooperative tourist office what is on that week.
Getting back to your hotel
There is no public transport, there are few taxis and the only stand is near the bus terminal (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Before you go out:
- If you are eating in the centre, stay on or near Avenida Hindenburg and walk back; the town is flat.
- For the Expo, 21 km away in Loma Plata district (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)), arrange a car both ways or ask your hotel. Don't count on finding a taxi afterwards.
- Save your hotel's number and tell them if you will be back late.
