In this guide
In Fernando de la Mora, the right mechanic is the one that does your kind of repair, is close enough that you are not nursing a failing car across town, and gives you a written diagnosis and quote before touching anything. Note the symptom, contact two shops in that specialty and do not approve extra work unless they ask you first.
What kind of shop do you need?
A "taller" can mean very different things. Going to the right one first saves you paying for two diagnoses:
- General mechanics: engine, clutch, brakes, suspension, front end.
- Electrical and fuel injection: the car will not start, stalls, drains the battery or shows a dashboard light. Ask whether they have a scanner for your make.
- Radiator and air conditioning: overheating, coolant leaks, A/C that does not cool.
- Body and paint: dents, scratches, insurance jobs.
- Tyres, alignment and quick lube (gomería, lubricentro): tyres, balancing, oil and filters.
- Brand dealer service: if the car is still under factory warranty, check there first so you do not complicate a claim.
If you need a shop for one particular make, such as Volkswagen, ask straight out whether they work on it often, whether they have the scanner and whether they source the parts or expect you to bring them.
North or South zone? Choose by your daily route
Avenida Mariscal Estigarribia splits Fernando de la Mora into a North Zone and a South Zone and is the usual way in from Asunción. Downtown Asunción is about 6 km away along Avenida Eusebio Ayala, and Ruta PY01 (the old Acceso Sur) is the other main road (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). With a car that is acting up, crossing those avenues at rush hour is what you want to avoid:
- If the car still runs, look first for a shop on your side of Mariscal Estigarribia.
- If you work in Asunción, a shop on your commute lets you drop the car off in the morning and pick it up after work.
- If you are without a car for a few days, the E1 electric bus line has run between San Lorenzo and Asunción along Eusebio Ayala since December 2025 (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).
- If the car will not move, ask whether the shop has a tow truck or works with one, and what the tow costs before it is sent.
How often to service, and what it costs
An Asunción mechanic quoted by Infonegocios (April 2026) (opens in a new tab) said factories usually recommend a service every 10,000 km on new cars, but for used engines, which are the majority in Paraguay, every 5,000 km is advisable. Oil and filters averaged G. 350,000 to G. 450,000, plus labour. Use that as a benchmark when comparing quotes, not as a fixed price.
The weather matters too: Fernando de la Mora can reach 45 °C in summer and drop to around 0 °C in winter (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Before summer: have the radiator, hoses, coolant and A/C charge checked. That is when those shops fill up.
- In winter: a weak battery tends to fail on cold mornings. If the car is slow to start, have the battery tested.
How to ask for a quote that actually helps
Before you call, write the symptom down in your own words: what happens, since when, cold or warm engine, at what speed. Then ask for:
- A diagnosis priced separately from the repair. Ask whether it is charged and whether it is deducted if they do the work.
- Parts and labour itemised, with the brand of each part and whether it is original, aftermarket, used or rebuilt.
- A completion date, and a call before any work you have not approved.
- A written warranty on labour and parts.
- Your old parts back.
Paraguay's consumer protection law, Ley 1334/98 (opens in a new tab), backs all of this: a warranty, when offered, must be in writing (art. 11); used or rebuilt products must be disclosed (art. 12); a service provider must state the price including taxes and how long the quote is valid (art. 15); and any extra work or cost must be communicated before it is done (art. 16). For an expensive job, compare at least two quotes from shops in the same specialty.
Paying and keeping records
QR is now Paraguay's most used electronic payment method: 68.1% of electronic payments in April 2026, according to Bancard (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). When you get the quote, ask whether they take QR, card or bank transfer, or want a deposit to buy parts.
When you collect the car, keep the invoice (factura) listing the work, the warranty and the mileage. The next mechanic will know what was replaced, and you have proof if the fault comes back.
FAQ
How do I find a mechanic near me in Fernando de la Mora?
Search the map for shops in the specialty you need and keep the ones on your side of Avenida Mariscal Estigarribia. Call first to confirm hours, availability and whether they work on your make.
Dealer service or independent shop?
If the car is under factory warranty, check with the dealer first so a claim is not complicated. Out of warranty, an independent specialist works well if they give a written diagnosis, quote and warranty.
How often should a used engine be serviced?
A mechanic quoted by Infonegocios in 2026 recommended every 5,000 km for used engines, against the 10,000 km factories usually suggest for new cars.
Can a shop charge me for work I did not approve?
Ley 1334/98 says any extra work or cost must be communicated before it is done (art. 16). Ask the shop to call you before adding anything to the quote.
