Nightlife in Santa Rita is small-town style: bars, choperías (draught-beer bars) and brewpub-style spots where people go to eat, drink and talk, rather than a strip of clubs for bar-hopping. To find the right bar in Santa Rita, decide on the plan (after-work beer, dinner with drinks or live music) and confirm opening hours and whether the kitchen is still open before you go. The exception is Expo Santa Rita week, when the town fills up and the night revolves around the fairground.

What is a night out in Santa Rita like?

Santa Rita is an agribusiness hub in Alto Paraná, about 70 km south of Ciudad del Este via routes PY02 and PY06 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Almost half of its residents are Brazilian, many from southern Brazil, and Portuguese is heard as much as Spanish (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). So in many places you are likely to be served in either language.

The municipality presents the local food scene as one of the best known in the department, and its first tourism tour in 2022 included a craft brewery (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). In short: good places to eat and drink, but not the variety of a big city.

Chopería, bar or brewery?

  • After work: a chopería with big tables works well for groups. Ask about draught-beer or bucket deals.
  • Dinner and drinks: check when the kitchen closes; in small towns it often closes before the bar.
  • Craft beer: ask whether the place pours its own beer on tap or is a brewery that only sells to take away.
  • Live music: check the venue's Instagram or Facebook for that day's line-up and any cover charge.

What changes during Expo Santa Rita?

Expo Santa Rita is one of the biggest fairs in Paraguay, with close to 100,000 visitors per edition (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It takes place at the CTG Indio José fairground, with live shows, a rodeo and an amusement park (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). The 2026 edition (the 32nd) ran from 25 April to 3 May (ARP (opens in a new tab)).

  • Bars and hotels fill up that week: book tables and rooms early.
  • Much of the nightlife happens at the fairground itself, around the shows.
  • For the next edition, check the official schedule early in the year; it usually falls in late April and early May.

If you want a longer night

For dancing or bar-hopping, Ciudad del Este has a much bigger scene, with venues along Avenida del Lago, Área 3 and the Boquerón neighbourhood (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). It is about 70 km by road, so the real question is how you get back: stay over or go with someone who is not drinking.

Getting back and what to bring

  • If you drive: Paraguay has zero tolerance for alcohol at the wheel, and from 0.400 mg/l on a breath test it is a criminal offence (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). If you are in a group, pick a driver who stays sober.
  • ID: always carry your ID or passport, especially on the highway.
  • Payment: QR is the most used electronic payment in Paraguay, 68.1% on the Bancard network (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Still carry some cash in guaraníes.
  • Big groups: message ahead on WhatsApp, especially Thursday to Saturday.
